water - daisy
Water is the perfect example of pure atmosphere. Written about sensuality, emotional outbursts and sexuality I created this song to allow these feelings to find peace and a home within our hearts. The music video shot by the exceptionally creative Lucy Foster. Perfectly capturing everything the song stands for.
behind the lyrics
Water is all about sensuality, emotional outbursts, confusion and sexuality. Writing is my ultimate meditation and this song meant the world to me. Being a confused teenager at best, I wanted to write a song capturing the innocent confusion that is usually overlooked by the stereotypical teenage angst as well as discovering the sexual aspects to life itself. I think every teenager especially teenage women can understand this unknown we enter and I wanted to recreate this confusion using atmosphere. "wasn't ready for the pain, wasn't ready for the rain' is not only a reference to my debut single 'rain.' but I also refer to the hormonal rollercoaster none of us are prepared for. 'but it came and washed everything away' meaning the hormonal imbalance within us completely change who we become in the future. The psychedelic connotations begin with the lyrics 'but my mind it kinda swirls and spirals around till it's gone'. We all go a bit crazy sometimes. In the chorus I repeat the words 'rain ebony'. To me these two words have many meanings from crying black, deep emotions to being rained on for the purpose of deep cleanse. In verse 2 'even though I've seen the light, I still think about leaving the same beneath the water' I wrote from the perspective of our subconscious. We do see the light at the end of the tunnel however we all fall right back into the cycle of emotions. 'beneath the water' is a metaphor for the barrier between childhood and adulthood, we all have to break that barrier at some point but the question is will we be the same person? Water consists of many questions we ask ourselves during our time being a teenager and as we become adults those questions become very overwhelming. We experience emotional, sexual confusion and rough patches however this song creates a safe space to think about these questions unjudged and unharmed.
behind the lyrics
Rain is my baby. It's written about cutting emotional chords and throughout, rain and the storm I sing about is a metaphor for this. In the second verse the lyric “but your soul took mine in its hand and walked” connotes an outside source taking your emotions and energy and just walking away with it. You are aware this is happening but the feeling of being stuck is in the way of doing anything about it so you let 'the storm roll in'. Thats where the last chorus comes in and the storm is erupting. When I wrote the second chorus I wanted to convey emotional release so although the story at this stage is the person letting go and cutting the emotional chord, they are ready and relief is expressed. We all know cutting emotional ties are very painful which I juxtaposed in the ending chorus from the lyrics 'the ground feels so much dryer cuz you're not here' however ending the song with the lyrics “ I try not to cry but its worse now cuz you’re not around” connoting how emotionally confusing letting go really is. Rain is intentionally a messy, confusing song to listen to because the topic is perfectly that to. Letting go will forever be a hard thing and rain provides understanding for anyone who has to go through that like I did when I wrote it.
